Forget fancy, $60 toners that need replacing every month. Mother Nature provides so many beautiful toning options that are deeply nourishing and hydrating for the skin, at a fraction of the cost.

Aloe vera’s natural astringent properties help to gently tone and firm the skin, making it especially supportive for dry and mature complexions. Valued for its ability to penetrate more deeply than many other botanicals, it also functions as a humectant, drawing in and retaining moisture to promote a hydrated, refreshed and radiant appearance. For these reasons, aloe vera can make a wonderful addition to a holistic skincare routine for health-conscious women who wish to support their skin in ageing gracefully, without relying on synthetic ingredients or invasive treatments.

What you will need

1 fresh aloe vera leaf

or

1-2 tbsp of pure aloe vera juice (ensure it is free from preservatives and appropriate for skincare)

How to:

> Rinse the aloe leaf under cool water.

> Cut the aloe open lengthwise to expose the gel.

> Scrape off any yellow sap (aloin) near the edges, as it contains latex that can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Leave the clear gel intact.

> Soak the leaf (with gel exposed and skin on) in pure, cold water for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse the aloe leaf again to remove any residual latex that can otherwise cause irritation.

> Remove the skin from the clear gel with a knife, rinse again and gently rub the clear gel directly onto clean skin.

Alternatively, you can also use store-bought pure aloe vera juice: dip cotton pads into the juice and gently wipe over the face. Follow with a moisturiser.

Notes:

> Select 100% pure aloe vera juice, free from preservatives or additives.

> Ensure the plant/ingredient species is appropriate for topical or cosmetic use. Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera), is the most widely recognised variety for skincare.

> Always perform a patch test before first use.

> Discontinue use if irritation or allergic reaction occurs.
